“Wonder Like Isaac Newton”
During visits with classes third grade and older, I challenge
students to
wonder like Isaac Newton did by discussing his
science and his times. I enjoy working with groups large and
small. My visits can be tailored to meet your needs.
If you wish, I
can take students through a hands-on experience to show how
Newton’s First Law works right at their desks.

"Day of the Dead"
Day of the Dead, celebrated on November 1 and 2,  sparks
students' interest in Mexico's "Halloween." I emphasize religious
themes for parochial school students and cultural issues for public
school classes. Either way, the topic captures kids from grades 4-
6. The presentation includes a hands-on activity as students made
papel picado, cut-paper banners to decorate their classrooms  or
homes.

“Get it Down and Shape It Up: The Process of Writing”
My workshop shows students how authors go through the writing
(and revision!) process. Young writers will learn how to
brainstorm ideas and “talk their ideas onto paper.” Most
important, they’ll understand why reworking an assignment will
help them write something to be proud of.

“Think like an Historian”
Most American children think that George Washington was a hero
and that King George III was a villain.  This workshop on critical
thinking skills shows students how to evaluate each “George” on
his own terms -- with surprising results!

“The Courageous Chemistry of Percy Julian
Dr. Percy Lavon Julian, a plant chemist, was the first African
American named to the National Academy of Sciences.  In the
1940s, Dr. Julian synthesized cortisone from soybeans in a
laboratory, making this wonder drug affordable for people with
arthritis. This presentation takes students through Julian’s life and
times in segregated America.  I include simple explanations of
Julian’s chemical breakthroughs.
Sharing what I've learned  is one of the rewards of writing
nonfiction for children. I'm available to work with your group,
whether large or small. My topics include Isaac Newton, the
writing process, and critical thinking skills. I also offer "made
to order" programs--please email me with your ideas.
“Thank you, Mrs. Hollihan, for an
informative and very enjoyable visit with
our fourth graders!  Your presentation
about the Day of the Dead really caught
our students’ imaginations, and the
papel picado craft added a great hands-
on experience for them.”
